The One When they Worked Their Butts Off

I. am. SO. tired.

You wanna know why? Because we worked SO hard this week. We had to race home almost every night this week to make the 9:00 curfew because we were teaching lessons, jundoing, and going door-to-door. Yeah...our district leader hates us because we're always late, but how can we be at home when there's so much to do?! Anyway, this week we saw a lot of miracles, but it was so exhausting.

On Wednesday, we met with our new investigator, Joo Ra-mi. She is 32 and there were complications when she was born, so she is in a wheelchair and pretty severely handicapped. She is the sweetest person. She really wants to learn English, but is also really curious about why we are missionaries. After practicing some English, we taught her about the Book of Mormon, who missionaries are and a little about Joseph Smith. We  taught her with the Elders and they really helped us a lot. She seemed pretty interested, so we invited her to come to church. She said she would think about it...more about that later.

On Thursday, we met with Hong Yeji and Han Mihyung. We were able to answer a lot of Han Mihyung's questions about the Word of Wisdom and our church before we started the 30 minutes of English. We translated the script of an episode of Modern Family that Hong Yeji found on the internet...(that was interesting...haha...and so funny! Luckily it was a clean episode!) and after that we, again, tried to teach them the Restoration, but it just turned into a really stressful interrogation/random list of questions about our church. I was so tired after! But we were able to teach about how we don't believe that there is just heaven and hell and about how we believe if you don't get a chance to know about Jesus/the gospel during this life you don't just go to hell like a lot of other churches teach. Hong Yeji really liked that, so I think next week we'll teach about the Plan of Salvation. Please pray for them and pray for us! Teaching them is not easy!

Now fast forward to Saturday. On Monday, when we were grocery shopping a member called us to tell us that he was going to send us the contact information of his co-worker's daughter who really wants to study at an American university and is thinking about going to BYU. Her name is Kim Hyunji. We met with her and automatically felt like friends because she is a year younger than me and I was able to tell her how fun BYU is because I studied there for 2 years. We told her that we could study English together and she said that was great, but she was also really interested in our church. She hadn't gone to church since middle school and was curious about why I would come all the way from America to talk to people about my religion. We taught her the whole Restoration message and she seemed to understand it really well. And she said that her intentions for meeting with us are that she wants to join our church and go to BYU. We are going to be meeting every Saturday now. I am so excited, but also a little nervous because it's just too good to be true! Haha. Also, she said she would come to church on Sunday, but couldn't come because they had other plans. Please pray for her! How fun would it be if we got to hang out together at BYU after my mission?!
After that, we visited our friend at her noodle restaurant but a bunch of ladies from her church were there and they were so rude to us. I can't even describe it to you. If you remember the story Elder Holland told in conference a few years ago about a sister missionary who was spit on and had chewed-up mashed potatoes thrown at her...well, I'm pretty sure that story happened in Korea. These ladies were so disgustingly rude to me because my Korean isn't perfect and because of my beliefs, but I just told them that I am in the process of learning. Then they interrogated me about the Bible, which I told them I study all of the time, believe to be God's word, and that I want to become like my scripture hero, Paul. But they just laughed at me and said so many horrible things. And they were even more rude to my companion because she's Korean. I really don't want to judge, but how can someone who professes to be a follower of Jesus Christ act that way to a couple of 20-year-old girls who are just trying to share their beliefs with people (who want to listen...there is no force, I can promise you that!) because we want people to feel happy like us? But our friend felt really bad so she gave us yummy fruit and told us to come back later. It was so awkward. Anyway, after that we just went back to the church and cried for like 30 minutes. The Elders came and we ate candy and said a prayer and then taught English class, which made me feel a little better. After that, we were walking to a dinner appointment at a member's house when our phone randomly rang and it was Joo Ra-mi. She said she wanted to come to church on Sunday and that if we came over at 8:00 she could help us learn how to help her with her wheelchair and figure out how to get her to the other side of Jinhae for Sacrament Meeting. We were so excited. At the dinner appointment, Sister Kwon had invited an old lady she met at work so we could talk about doing the 30/30 program. We taught her about eternal families and ate yummy food, but I have never in my whole life met anyone who talks more than this old lady. Seriously, you don't know anything about talkers until you have met Korean grandmas. They can literally go on for 45 minutes without anyone else having a chance to get in a word. So we were stuck at this member's house with this grandma for close to 2 1/2 hours!!! We were late to help Joo Ra-mi. I felt sooooo bad! We were also so late to get home! It was insane. But what to do when you have a member referral/new investigator and another appointment?! Ah! "Korean time" ('quick' 30 min-1 hour appointment=3 hour appointment) is so stressful!

On Sunday, Joo Ra-mi came to church and the members were so, so kind and welcoming to her. I was so grateful! But I just think that because of her circumstances, she felt a little awkward so she left right before Sacrament Meeting started. I was so sad. She is kind of a confusing investigator and I am starting to think that she is just interesting in meeting with us because she is lonely and she thinks Americans are cool. But if we can share the gospel little-by-little, I know it will help her!

After church, we judoed for more than 3 hours because there was a festival downtown and so many people. We were so pooped when we went to bed last night. Today, our P-Day plans are to sleep. Haha.

I love you all! I would love to hear from all of you!! Thank you so much for the packages and letter and things! It helps so much to get some love from home!

I you love!

The One When 진해 was a Miracle Machine

Hello everyone!!!

What a week! I can honestly say that this week I worked harder than I have on my entire mission and maybe even my entire life. But we saw a miracle every single day this week, picked up two new investigators, and by the end of this week we could possibly have four new investigators. Finally my 3+ months of hard work in Jinhae are paying off!

Okay, so Monday's miracle was insane. After P-Day and Area Meeting, we still had some time to do missionary work, so we decided to go to a random apartment near our house and 카카호호 (knock on doors) at a random apartment complex near our house. After rejection after rejection and a few very scary, very angry old ladies answered the door, we decided to do just a few more before going home. Well, the last door just happened to be the house of a former investigator that they had just dropped when I got to Jinhae. She invited us in and gave us grapes and chestnuts and we taught her a little of the first lesson and about prayer and how God lives. The spirit was so strong. She really wants her kids to do the 30/30 English/gospel program again, but her work hours are too busy. But she is going to send her boys to English class. And she said we can come by any time she's home and talk. What a miracle!

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we saw more huge miracles. During General Conference we were fasting to be able to find new people to teach and to be able to meet with an investigator that randomly fell off the face of the Earth right before I came to Jinhae. On Tuesday, we were walking to the church and I felt like I needed to talk to this student who had just gotten off of the bus. So I asked her if she liked English (in Korean...lol) and she kind of just ignored me. But I just kept talking to her and she said she had met with the missionaries before. And somewhere in the back of my mind I knew this was our former investigator we had been searching high and low for. So we kept talking and I asked her what her name was. "윤자빈" she said. And immediately I got chills and it felt like the spirit had struck my heart with lightning. I was talking to the girl I had been fasting and praying for for three transfers. God really does answer prayers and He is so aware of us. And I know he loves 윤자빈 (Yoon Jabin) because he is sending big neon arrows telling her where to go and what to do. If only she could recognize them! So later this week we took cookies to her house and we are praying for an opportunity to meet her again. I would love it if y'all would pray for her to. Also on Wednesday we met with the investigator that we teach with the Masan sisters and she is really progressing. We watched President Uchtdorf's general conference talk together and she really loved it. After that, we went to a the 국수 (noodle) restaurant by the church that another former investigator owns. We ate and talked and she has been really great friends with the sister for years. She invited us to teach her how to make American cookies with her that Saturday...and she gave us free food! We were so excited! After that, we went to the church for English class and when we were setting up a time to do the 30/30 program with Hong Yeji, Han Mihyung (the cute mom) said that she wanted to the the program too! She and Hong Yeji have become friends at English class, we they decided to do it together! Yay!

On Thursday, we had our lesson with Hong Yeji and Han Mihyung at Han Mihyung's house. After the 30 minutes of English, we started to share our message by asking our friends what role religion had played in their life. As usual, Hong Yeji gave a beautiful answer. But Han Mihyung opened up and told us that she is searching for a religion right now and she likes ours, but she still has lots of questions and she doesn't just want to join right away/make a brash decision. Thank goodness! She already doesn't smoke, drink, drink tea/coffee and I know she has been prepared for this happy message we have to share for a while. But I know it is going to take some time to soften her heart. We just have one problem. Her needs and Hong Yeji's needs are so different. But we are praying to figure out how to work it out. Please pray for both of them!

On Friday, we worked our butts off. We met with this crazy lady we always run into on the street. She is literally insane. Haha. But we helped her a little at her house, so it was good service I guess? After that we talked to EVERYONE! We knocked on doors for hours...and hours...!! And then sticker-board jundoed with the Elders, I saw a woman in a wheelchair and felt like I should say hello to her. She started trying so hard to speak English to me. I think she maybe has Parkinson's Disease. The man with her told us they really want to do the program even though it will be hard. We talked for a little bit and learned that he is her boyfriend and he has been taking care of her for years. We are going to start teaching them English with the Elders. Pray for them and pray for us to be able to teach them well! I really hope we can serve them and give them some hope.

On Saturday, we made cookies with the lady who owns the noodle restaurant. She is the best and so much fun! We all immediately became friends. She wants me to start teaching her and her son (who is my age, so she really likes me because she said I feel like a daughter) English. There's just one problem: her son is studying to become a preacher and we heard from some sisters who served here a long time ago that her son hates our church. Please pray that everything will be okay and that we will still be able to teach them some how. I know miracles can happen!

Well, that's all the news for this week. I love my new companion and conference was great! We eat really healthy! When my companion said that she liked brown rice I was just like "did we just become best friends?!" She's the best! She doesn't speak really any English, but it's okay because she helps me a lot with my Korean.

I love you all please pray for us and for our investigators! We love them so much and we want to help then so bad!

Also, I would really love it if everyone would just send me like one sentence letting me know they're alive because I have been so homesick lately. Lehi was so right: there is an opposition in all things. At this amazing and happy time on my mission all of my friends and loved-ones are having babies and getting married and finishing their missions and I just want to make time stop so I can be there for it all. I just wish I had a time turner like Hermione so I could be there for both my beloved family and friends and still be here to teach our investigators. My heart is just breaking! I would love to hear from a few of you!!

Well, that's all!

사랑해요!!!
I you love

The One with Transfers

Where do I even begin??

How about at NOOOOOOO because Sister Kim Yeji got transferred to Jeju!!! I am so depressed. I don't think anyone can understand! We have had so much fun these last two transfers, and we finally started to see our work paying off. Oh, let's talk about that! Hong Yeji decided to start the 30/30 English program where we spend 30 minutes teaching English and 30 minutes sharing a spiritual message. How?? Because of transfers! Isn't it funny how God works?

Usually on the last Thursday night of the transfer, the AP's call between 8:50 and 10:20. If the American AP calls, the American is getting transferred and if the Korean AP calls, the Korean companion is getting transferred. But our call never came. We were both so excited and nervous and confused so we couldn't sleep. However, after exercise in the morning, the American AP called us. They had run out of time the night before because there were a lot of changes this transfer. I was so nervous! But all of the sudden he said that I was staying in Jinhae and that Sister Kim Yeji was going to whitewash on Jeju! We freaked out. She is so nervous! Please pray for her!! I am secretly a little jealous because I want to go to Jeju so bad...but I think my chances are high because last transfer Elder Trentman went from Jinhae to Jeju and now Sister Kim Yeji, so maybe I've got a shot? *Please* Anyway, because Sister Kim was getting transferred, we had an opportunity to meet with Hong Yeji because she wanted to say bye to Kim Yeji. We went out to eat and during the meal there was the most perfect chance to talk about the 30/30 program. At first Hong Yeji was a little skeptical because she already goes to another church, but when Sister Kim started talking about the Book of Mormon Hong Yeji suddenly opened up and was really eager to start the program. She also shared some of her religious worries and doubts about her current church with us. I have a really good feeling about her! And she is such a great friend and a lovely person. You don't just meet people like Hong Yeji on accident!

Anyway, this week was really great. I am so excited to meet my new companion. Her name is 정혜민  (Jong Hyeh Min). She is also Korean and she doesn't speak much English. She is from Seoul and I hear she is really good at cooking, so I am excited to learn some of her recipes. I have been praying for her and I would love it if y'all would pray for her too.

Keep being wonderful!
